Confessions of a write-a-holic

All work and no play

After reading many forum posts and articles, it has become evident that writers all have one thing in common; we write and write and write...

We writers are like robots, it's been bred into us somehow that just because we carry the title, "writer" that is what we must do 24/7. do you ever find yourself tossing and turning at night, thinking about what you can write next, what will appeal to your audience? Do you find yourself out shopping and look at things objectively and think about how you can write something about everything in the store? Do you read a magazine and ponder ways to take what you've written and give it your own angle? Guess what... you've got OWD... obssesive writers disorder.

Yeah, that's you alright... don't try and deny it, denial does you no good. How manyjournals do you keep? how many articles have you written? books published? how many writing communities are apart of?

Do you see yourself as Optimus Prime or Superman in the writing world, looking for ways to save or help some soul from Megatron or Lex Luther? I won't lie... I do... ok, only sometimes, but I don't have the problem, you do, this isnt about me... I really am superman, my last name is Kent.

OWD can be a lonely thing, with no one who understand you and your intelligent mind. Writers can be like Unicorns, original and misunderstood... people think we're beautiful on the outside but are intimidated by us. Not everyone can be as clever and witty while being grammatically correct, except writers. Writers don't really care to fit in socially, we stand back and observe with a watchful eye and keen ear for our next opportunity to have something to write about. Our world is lonely yes, but it doesnt have to be.

Confess and move on

There are many articles that have been written that talk about how writers need to learn discipline and time management, that's all fine and good, but we're still lonely; no one can comprehend our complex minds. It's pugnant to think that there really aren't that many people in this world who care about vocabulary and enhancing it, expanding it and using it.

Don't say ain't, aint aint a word.... yeah whatever, I'll say if I want to and I'll write a whole freakin book about the word if you gotta problem with it!

People who say that really urk me, because they can't even spell ain't and they're trying to give me a vocabulary lesson, please. Yes, writers can be cocky, but it's because we know what we know because we've actually taken the time to learn what we know. Writers are always learning, blossoming, graving more and more knowledge; we have to be know-it-alls, what's wrong with that?

See how writing helps relax you? You get it all off your chest and move on to the next thing you want to write about.

OWD can be maintained by sitting down with your journal and spilling your guts every morning or evening. It's not about time management and discipline at all for someone with OWD, it's about getting what's on your mind, off of it and doing it when the thought crosses your mind then, that way you won't be spending all day or night fussing over it. If you can write it down then, you know it's there later and can come back to it, no need to sweat it. This opens time to have a little bit of a life to ease the lonelyness.

Nice rant. My wife doesn't unerstand my love of writing, she loves it, especially my poetry, but she just don't get my drive. I try not to be condecending and don't think of myself as a good writer even, but I can get my message through to my readers, I think. I have fun with it. I just don't have enough time right now to do any good stuff, it's summer and I have things to get done outside. But my mind is always working on something. No journals.
